Camera & Production Accessories

Here are a few camera accessories which I have designed or modified for NYU using our simple milling machine.

RONFORD HEAD EXTENSION

The camera class needed an extension added to the Ronford head to accommodate cameras with a larger magazine.  I used aluminum which is easy to mill, the hard part was the precision needed to get all the screws to line up.

ARRI SR II CAMERA ACCESSORY PLATE

This is a camera accessory plate I designed and built for the ARRI SR II.  It's mainly used to mount monitors and light panels to the handle.

ARRI III CAMERA ACCESSORY PLATE

The ARRI III is a pretty old 35mm camera but still great and the NYU camera class still uses it a lot.  They requested an accessory plate which is a similar design to the ARRI SR II but with a post mount.

OVERHEAD FRAME CARRIER

We purchased a snap together 12' x 12' frame for overheads and butterflys (for non-production people: fabrics to control lighting on set) and I put together a carrier.

The frame breaks down into eight 6' sections so I made keyed sleeves which slide on the ends and cinch down with webbing which doubles as the carry handle.

EQUIPMENT CASES

I get demented pleasure from organizing (see The Shop post) and when we get new equipment, I love figuring out how to arrange the case.  We typically use Pelican cases which are waterproof, crush proof, etc. and come with pick n pluck foam which is pre-scored so you can easily make the proper cut-out for your equipment.  The problem with pick n pluck is under heavy use it falls apart.  I put together a custom foam cutting table and we would carve custom layouts from solid foam.  This is a total pain and I finally came up with a great compromise.  I designed a custom topper for the case which is laser cut from ABS plastic.  It's then glued on top of the pick n pluck foam so it doesn't fall apart.  As added benefit the plastic can be etched and is a great surface for adding labels.  This method has been field tested with great success.
